In 2008 for our programming course me and Maarten van der Mark decided to experiment with detecting sign language with a webcam. Because we had little time to implement it we limited it to a controlled environment. After experimenting with various blob and shape detection libraries we decided on a simpler approach. Our final demo application was able to detect up to eight different hand-shapes by detecting the black glove worn by the user, and calculate the 2D correlation with images previously registered.
